I have so many thoughts about this game, and I may not be making a lot of sense but basically, go off dev team. ![]() Other theories could be that maybe this is actually Bruce's time to pass on, and it's him we're taking to the Everdoor, or that this is Stella needing to say goodbye to them rather than the other way around (but that's an entirely different overarching theory on its own). He doesn't even openly admit to Stella that he knows Mickey has been gone a long time and that he hasn't been able to admit it to himself until they're sailing towards the Everdoor. One of the few times Bruce ever speaks in the first person is when first arriving at the Everdoor, "I've been.you know how I've been." He says he "can't do this job without brother" before getting on the boat with Stella. He asks for carrots first, then claims he never said carrots and it was for peaches, then says "What am I going to do with carrots or peaches?" before asking to be taken to the Everdoor. A perception that is so strong that they even appear as two separate people to other spirits.īruce extends the time until he has to say goodbye to Mickey by blaming Stella for getting the "job" wrong over and over, until he knows he can't hold out forever. Bruce is so caught up in not wanting to lose his brother that he plays pretend with his own idea of who Mickey is, without letting Mickey exist beyond his perception of him. A lot of what Bruce said on "behalf" of Mickey made me stop and think, "Well, that isn't fair to Mickey for Bruce to speak for him like that." It wasn't until much later that I thought that it might be because Mickey was never there in the first place. Seems to be the only person who is able to hear or have a conversation with Mickey. Speaks for him, thinks for him, gives orders for him. Mickey essentially acts as Bruce's puppet throughout his time on the ship. The death of an idea of a person rather than an actual person. What Stella takes to the Everdoor is Bruce's own inability to let Mickey go. However, I suggest it goes even further than just that Stella is taking Bruce and Mickey both to the Everdoor, and that Mickey is already gone. Mickey is no longer with Bruce, and everything Bruce does revolves around Mickey because he cannot let his brother go. Incapable of coming to terms with the fact that his brother, while technically alive, is beyond salvation, Bruce keeps on making outlandish requests and angry comments, which merely shows his pain." Here, the devs basically outright say it. From the Spiritfarer wiki, citing the Spiritfarer artbook: Bruce always talks “on behalf” of his brother, in denial that Mickey simply is not there anymore. We know that Stella knew them after a drunk driving accident by Mickey left him in critical condition during her time working at the hospital. In both of these examples, Mickey is both literally and figuratively a weight that Bruce appears to carry around on his own. Bruce plays a supporting role in every one of his own stories. Every story is just Mickey, Mickey, Mickey, my brother, my brother, my brother. Then, we have the fact that Bruce hardly ever tells us anything about himself. Bruce is the one carrying him around the ship, pointing him in the right direction when talking to Stella, speaking for him on every occasion. ![]() ![]() He never says a word, barely seems to acknowledge Stella when giving hugs, doesn’t even move on his own. But it makes a lot of sense, and explains a lot about Bruce and why he is the way he is.įirstly, the obvious. I didn’t even catch on that maybe there was something else happening that we couldn’t initially see until right before I brought them to the Everdoor. There’s nothing at first glance or even first playthrough that determines that they’re anything but two separate people. Seems a little weird considering Mickey is most of what we see with them. Spoilers ahead!īruce and Mickey are not Bruce and Mickey. ![]() Something incredibly ingenious by the devs, and this may or may not be common knowledge that I’m picking up on late but if it isn’t then I’ll say this is pure conjecture on my part and analysis by what we see in game.
